Preservation
of Monuments Board |
| |
The
Preservation of Monuments Board (PMB) was formed
in 1971 with the enactment of the Preservation of Monuments
Act on 29 January 1971. It was transferred from Ministry
of National Development to Ministry of Information and
the Arts (MITA) on 1 April 1997 as a statutory board under
MITA.
The Board is now a statutory board of the Ministry of
Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA). |
| |
The
Board's objectives are:
| |
To preserve
monuments of historic,
traditional, archaeological, architectural or artistic
interests; |
| |
To protect and
augment the amenities of those monuments; |
| |
To stimulate
public interest and support in the preservation
of those monuments; and |
| |
To take appropriate
measures to preserve all records, documents and
data relating to those monuments. |
|
| |
|
The aim of preservation is to safeguard monuments as
enduring historical landmarks, as they provide a vital
link to Singapore's past. PMB has gazetted an interesting mix
of 55 religious, civic, institutional and commercial
buildings as National
Monuments ,
all of which represents the multi facet character of
Singapore's
history and heritage
(Courtesy of Public Education/NHB).
Some of the programmes/activities the Board has organised
on the theme of monuments include art competition, bi-annual
photographic competitions, travelling exhibitions and
publications .
One of the greatest challenge that the board faces is
to promote public awareness and recognition that our
national monuments are beyond buildings of bricks and
mortar and architectural beauty. These enduring historical
landmarks are living places of history and repositories
of our nation's social memory.
As a registered Charity
and Institution
of Public Character (IPC) appointed by the office of the Commissioner of Charities, PMB also administers
a "Tax
Exemption Scheme for Donations to National Monuments ",
which is intended to help the owner/trustee or the management
committee of a non-commercial national monument to raise
funds, obtain tax-exemption receipts for the donors
and to use the donations to restore their monument.
Donors to this scheme will be entitled to Double-Tax
Exemption (twice the donation value) for
monetary donations made on or after 1 January 2002.
The participating National Monuments are:
1. Siong Lim Temple
2. St George's Church
3. Sri Mariamman Temple
4. Sri Perumal Temple
5. Abdul Gaffoor Mosque
6. Thian Hock Keng Temple
7. Hong San See Temple
8. Nagore Durgha
9. Prinsep Street Presbyterian Church
