Launch of GreenField 06

A Showcase Of Creativity And Community Entrepreneurship In Singapore

Get inspired and unleash your creative potential from 25 to 27 November 2006 at GreenField 06.  Presented by the Creative Community Singapore (CCS), an initiative by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA), GreenField was officially launched by Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, Dr Lee Boon Yang today at Atrium@Orchard.

One of the key events under the month-long Crea©tive 2006 - Reinvent Your Future showcase to celebrate and promote Singapore’s creative industries, GreenField is targeted at students/youths, aspiring artists, creative professionals and even people who are not yet in the creative industries.  It aims to:

       Offer an insight to the Creative Industries by showcasing the success stories of CCS-supported community-driven projects;

       Provide an exchange platform where the public can interact with like-minded creatives, and in the process be inspired by those who have achieved their goals;

       Inspire individuals to unleash their creative potential, deploy their creative energy and become a part of this fast growing cluster;

       Enable the public to discover how Creative Community Singapore can help turn your ideas into reality.

The word “GreenField” signifies the untapped latent creative potential and new opportunities in the creative industries.  The power to transform original ideas into expressions that can affect the life and well-being of our fellow citizens will become a key competitive advantage in the next phase of Singapore’s progress and development.

Many of the projects featured in GreenField are collaborative efforts by the people, public and private sectors which provide support to budding entrepreneurs wishing to venture into the creative field.   They are part of CCS’ on-going efforts to help Singaporeans build a creative and connected community by providing facilitation, co-branding, marketing and co-funding for creative projects.  Since its inauguration more than a year ago, the CCS has supported 36 projects of which 10 have been completed. These 10 completed projects have seen participation from 26,000 people; and resulted in the training of 3,600 people in various aspects of the creative industries and the creation of close to 50 jobs.

Highlights at GreenField 06

Over the next three days, GreenField 06 will provide a visual feast of the creative industries through an exciting line-up of project displays, workshops, live performances, as well as open houses and networking platforms. Some of the highlights are listed in the Annex.

ROJAK

ROJAK, a brand encapsulating the talents and vision of Singapore creatives, will be launched to the public at GreenField 06. ROJAK is the result of a year’s work with 16 Singapore companies from the creative industries led by INC3, a privately-owned incubator company nurturing creative talents and businesses in the areas of arts, design and media. These 16 companies range from fashion, the visual arts, retail, publishing, toy and furniture design to live media entertainment. Heading these companies are long established individuals from their respective creative fields such as fashion designer, Benny Ong, retailer, Catherine Chong and toy designer, Yeow. Through a loose association with INC3, these 16 companies produce creative work marketed under the ROJAK brand.

Age Invader

Mixed Reality Lab developed Age Invaders, a novel social physical game to allow the elderly to play harmoniously together with children in physical space. They use a fusion of technology and art to make a new form from the traditional arcade game Space Invader. The game parameters are adjusted such that older players have more time to react to slow rockets fired by young opponents; conversely young players have to react much faster. Take part in the game at GreenField 06 and believe for yourself how physical ability across generation can be balanced.

Beat-by-Beat

The Musical Theatre Society’s faith in making the local musical scene more dynamic and inspirational fertilised Beat-by-Beat, a programme developed to cultivate made-in-Singapore musicals through its incubation workshops. Since its inception in 2005, 17 new musicals range from 30 to 120 minutes have been developed and staged. A variety of songs used for “Five Foot Broadway” – a compilation of five Beat-by-Beat musicals – will be showcased at GreenField 06. Along with this project, IM Innovations, a partner of the Beat-by-Beat programme, will also demonstrate how to create digital effects for theatre performance using the latest technology. If you have seen the musical “Women in White” by globally renowned composer and producer Andrew Lloyd Webber, you will be amazed by the sophisticated and captivating digital animation and visual effects on-stage.

Jumpstart Incubation Project (JIP)

JIP is a five-month mentorship programme that aims to improve the quality of the lives of low-income women by helping them develop lifeskills and self-confidence through the Creative Industries. More than 36 women participated in this programme, and they will exhibit and sell their creations at a flat rate of S$10 at GreenField 06. Items vary from T-shirts, book covers, tote bags and even sculptures. Proceeds from the sale will go directly to the project to further support and sustain the women’s works.
