CREA©TIVE 2006 ILLUMINATES NOVEMBER WITH EXCITING LINE-UP OF EVENTS

The Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) will be staging Crea©tive 2006 – Reinvent Your Future throughout November.

 

2                 A collaborative effort by MICA agencies and a vast network of private sector partners, Creaãtive 2006 will provide opportunities for the domestic and international arts, media, and design sectors as well as the general public to participate, exchange ideas, and contribute towards the development of Singapore as a hub for the creative industries.  Crea©tive 2006 provides an umbrella platform to celebrate and promote the creative industries in Singapore.

4.       There will also be plenty of activities for everyone to participate, engage, and experience the arts, media and design at work. Four new events – Noise Singapore 2006, GreenField, 20/20 and 10TouchPoints – have been added to last year’s line-up of events. Aside from reaching out to Singaporeans, the first three events also encourage them to go beyond being passive audiences.  The full event line-up is in the enclosed fact sheet.

 

5.       Dr Tan Chin Nam, Permanent Secretary MICA, said, “As Singapore develops into a global city, it is important to channel energy into this promising area of creative industries which in recent years has grown faster than the general economy.  This is also the trend seen in other creative cities such as London[1].  In our next phase of economic growth with innovation and knowledge as the key thrusts, the creative industries have much to contribute.”

 

6        An impressive array of international creative icons, participants and enterprises are participating in Creaãtive 2006.  They include urban landscape guru, Benjamin Wood, founder of Wallpaper, Tyler Brule, advertising icon, Neil French, and fashion and celebrity photographer, Leslie Kee, Singapore’s brightest design and creative talents such as Mark Ong (international sneakers designer), Hanson Ho (founder of H55), Y J Ban (creator of Stikfas toys), Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell (founders of WOHA) and Jonathan Seow (the man behind the fashion brand, Woods & Woods) will also showcase their talent and share their experience and ideas.

About Crea©tive 2006 – Reinvent Your Future

 

Crea©tive 2006 – Reinvent Your Future is a month-long showcase to celebrate and promote Singapore's creative industries, which comprises the arts, design and media. Now in its second year, this international showcase is initiated by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) as part of the efforts to develop Singapore into a prominent Asian hub for the creative industries. 

 

Bringing to Singapore and international audiences an experience of world-class creativity this year are Beyond 2006, Asia Media Festival, President’s Design Award, Noise Singapore, GreenField, Creative Youth Xchange, 20/20 and 10TouchPoints.

 

 

About Singapore’s Creative Industries

 

In 2003, Singapore’s creative industries made up 3.88% of GDP (nominal value-added of S$6.3 billion) and employed 93,000 employees.  MICA’s vision is to continue to grow the creative industries to create more jobs and value-added in the years to come.  To achieve this, MICA is investing more than S$200 million to develop the creative industries over five years from FY2004 to FY2008.

[1] Overall, the creative industries in Singapore grew at a rate of 7.6% per annum (between1995 to 2003) as compared to 4.3% for the general economy over the corresponding period.

 

The growth rate of the creative industries in the United Kingdom is at an average of 5% per annum (between 1997 to 2004). UK's growth rate for the overall economy was at 3% for the same period. Asia Media Festival 2006

The Asia Media Festival (AMF) is an annual fiesta with a line-up of inspiring and exciting activities to delight all senses of the media and entertainment industry. Anchored in Singapore, the cosmopolitan business hub of Asia Pacific, AMF presents a spectrum of events for both trade and public.

President’s Design Award

The President’s Design Award is Singapore’s most prestigious award for its designers and designs, and recognises the significant achievements and contributions of the nation’s design talents. The spirit of the Award encourages design excellence that improves quality of life, enhances human potential and national competitiveness.

 

The Award recognises design creativity, and the designs that shape our experience of the world - from how we move to what we see and feel. Hence, the Award is presented in two categories, Singapore Designers of the Year and Singapore Designs of the Year.

Noise Singapore 2006

Noise Singapore is a youth arts festival for young people, by young people. Based across various media platforms, it is dedicated to "making noise" about the work of young artists in Singapore. Noise aims to unearth fresh talent and inspire fresh, original content from youths in Singapore.

Unique to Noise Singapore is its website (www.noisesingapore.com) – a key showcase platform – which will feature over 1,000 shortlisted works by Noise artists. A Noise Festival Showcase will also be held at Marina Square’s Central Atrium featuring works and live band performances by Noise artists in early November.

Creative Youth Xchange @ Hello Kitty

 

Creative Youth Xchange is a platform for Asia Pacific youth below 29 to showcase their most cutting-edge examples of synergistic creative ideas and talent across the spheres of arts, design and media. The third edition of CYX partners Sanrio and Sheng Tai Toys to help individuals realise their dreams through Creative Youth Xchange @ Hello Kitty, which comprises a competition, workshop and exhibition.

GreenField 2006

GreenField 2006 is an exchange platform to facilitate interactions, ideas and partnerships amongst individuals, professionals, groups and organisations from the Private, Public and People sectors

 

Via a visually-exciting showcase and over 20 interactive activities (exhibitions, workshops, performances and open houses), GreenField 2006 provides an insight to the creative industries by showcasing examples of the types of projects to achieve this goal, and inspire creative individuals to unleash their creative potential, deploy their creative energy and become a part of this fast growing cluster.

20/20

20/20 is an ongoing showcase and documentation of Singaporean creativity, by Singapore’s designers across different media and disciplines. It features the best design works done locally or by Singaporeans around the world. The creators share the newest expressions of their influences, inspirations and vision of an ever-evolving creative landscape. More importantly, it demonstrates how Singaporean creativity has touched the lives of many people around the world.

10TouchPoints

10TouchPoints is a national design campaign that brings the general public, local design community and item owners together through 3 phases to identify and redesign 10 'everyday things' in Singapore. Through its course, the campaign will aim to demystify design and express that good design is user-centric and can improve everyday life.

The first voting and nomination phase will be launched on 16 Nov. There will be a special lecture by Mr Richard Seymour and Dick Powell on 22 Nov.
