RADM(NS) LUI TUCK YEW ATTENDS 3 RD ASEM CULTURE MINISTERS’ MEETING

RADM(NS) Lui Tuck Yew, Senior Minister of State for Information, Communications and the Arts, and Education, will attend the 3 rd ASEM Culture Ministers’ Meeting (ASEM CMM) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 21 to 24 April 2008.

2 The theme of the 3 rd ASEM CMM is "Cultural Diversity – Realising the Action Plan". Singapore will co-chair a Workshop on “Digitalisation of Culture – Challenges and Opportunities” together with France, and share the National Library Board’s (NLB) digitalisation strategy. The NLB will highlight two projects to illustrate how digital technology can be instrumental in the promotion and preservation of heritage and culture. The first is its digitalisation of all issues of the Singapore Straits Times since 1845, in partnership with Singapore Press Holdings. The other is the NLB’s Online Repository of Artistic Works (NORA), in partnership with arts and heritage agencies.

3 The ASEM CMM was first started as the Conference on Cultures and Civilisations, launched at the ASEM IV Summit in September 2000 by then-Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong. It is co-sponsored by China, France, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Spain and Poland, and provides a platform for ASEM Culture Ministers to discuss plans to deepen people-to-people exchanges, and promote a better understanding of the rich cultures of ASEM member countries.

4 RADM(NS) Lui will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts and NLB.
